Our 2nd Annual Subdivision Bass Safari was last night, and a really really great time! Everyone who played pretty much wrecked shop in their own distinct way.. thanks much to Girl Unit, Sgt. Sass, Rx, Siyoung, Buddy Leezle, Lady Prowl, Battleaxe Baby (next time!!), Dev79, Sonkin, Dani Hill and of course all yall Bassheads for coming out and supporting! I’m really excited to present UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED, VOL. I! Not having released a mix since Luvstep, I’ve tried my best to make this one a worthy successor. Whereas the former was made to hone in on a specific subgenre, this mix was engineered to highlight a bunch of different strains of bass music I’m excited about right now. There’s come cross-pollination going on too: I really like a lot of the “Drumstep” stuff that’s coming out lately, but have had the most success playing it out mixed with rap hooks and club chants (my Tim Dolla remix in this section is basically that), so I’ve tried to translate some of that here. There’s all sorts of little edits along the way, and a crop of my upcoming releases too.

Big treat in store for next weekend.. we’re teaming up with Philly’s all-girl DJ night DOUBLE DUTCH to provide yall with an evening of music we’re calling DOUBLE DIVISION! It’s at the recently renovated M-Room just east of Front and Girard, which boasts a pretty bangin new soundsystem.
Our own Lady Prowl and Natty Boh Peep (of PGH Subdivision; her first Subdiv performance in Philly!) will be sharing the decks with London’s Ikonika, for the first show on her US tour. Ikonika’s one of the people at the forefront of the evolution of dubstep, having just released an LP on the renowned label Hyperdub (one of their first full-length releases since Burial’s “Untrue”).

Between this week’s Dancing Without Borders Haiti benefit at The Barbary, the Tough Love [Luvstep Release] Party, and Final Fridays, February in Philly is looking hella intimidating for such a short month! It’s because of the leap year, I guess.

This guy’s making some of the most interesting music from that nebulous nether-region between dubstep, 2 step, UK funky, and house—with elements of ghettotech, garage, and of course heavy bass thrown in. The man’s doing a short US tour this month, and we’re teaming up with Mishka to bring him to Philly! What’s going on, everyone? It’s Rx. This week is just the beginning of all the exciting announcements, tracks, and shows we’re posting in February.
First off, check out the track I did with Sonkin called “Compton, Saturn,” which dropped yesterday on the Abstract Logic Recordings’ compilation “Bass Wars.” You can pick it up at any digital DJ retailer.
I’m also excited to announce on February 1st my first ever Rx EP entitled “New Year’s Day” will be dropping on Subdepth Records! If you’re in the Philly area, be sure to swing by early to The Barbary Thursday, February 4th at the “Dancing Without Borders!” Haiti relief show, as I’ll be playing the EP in its entirety before all the other amazing acts go on. Mr. Flufftronix will be there as well, so it’ll be a night of party jams, great live music, and of course big bass for a great cause.

Rx & Chae Hawk released a teaser for Rx’s upcoming album “Concussions.” It’s footage from their show together in Buffalo with Rusko, and shows off Chae’s very own brand of Malt Liquor. Check out the live footage video, as well as the commercial for Chae’s own brand of malty goodness (directed by Chae Hawk himself). Mmmmmm, Hurricane.
